The McKenzie County Water Resource District (MCWRD) manages rural water distribution projects and supports water interests throughout the county. Jaret Wirtz serves as the Manager of the Water Resource District with offices in the McKenzie County Courthouse.

Overview of McKenzie County Rural Water Projects
McKenzie County System I (Watford City Rural Area): This project is complete and fully operational. The system continues to add users and is now serving 126 users after having been bid originally with 89 users. The system is currently seeking grant funding to add approximately 90 more users. This expanded service area would serve users in and around the current system and also the Tobacco Garden area.
McKenzie County System II (Eastern McKenzie County): This project is currenly serving one industrial user with water from Fort Berthold Rural Water. Complete funding has been met for this project with bid letting and construction to take place this year. The system will add over 130 users and will be complete by Summer of 2011.
McKenzie County System III (Grassy Butte Service Area): This project was funded in the summer of 2007 and construction was recently completed. There are nearly 100 connections planned to recieve water. In agreement with the MCWRD the system will recieve water from Southwest Water Authority, who will also own and operate the system.
McKenzie County System IV (Alexander Service Area): This system is currently in the developmental phase and has over 90 signups throughout the service area. The MCWRD is currently seeking grant money for this project.
